Do not bear a grudge

The Literal Commandment

You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD. (Leviticus 19:18)

The literal commandment is that we should not bear a grudge.

Messiah Says

Messiah implicitly affirmed this commandment:

But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. (Matthew 5:22)

We should not bear a grudge against a brother and remain angry with him. If we do so then we will be "guilty before the court" and possibly fall into additional sin of speaking slander and embarrassing about him.

Pictures of Messiah

A grudge is a "deep-seated feeling of resentment or rancor.1

There is no resentment or rancor when a judge convicts a criminal for violating the law. There is an appointed time for Messiah, the Judge of all things to judge righteously... both the small and the great (Revelation 20:12). Justice will be served.

This commandment reminds us of this fact and tells us that we should not hold a grudge (and thus not trust in the justice that the Judge will one day bring). We should instead trust in G-'s promises and know that there is a day appointed for judgment and relinquish any resentment we have against anyone else.

How Messiah Fulfilled

Messiah fulfilled this commandment by not bearing a grudge. After Messiah was crucified and resurrected, He did not bear a grudge against those who crucified Him or take revenge against them even though it was entirely within His power to do so.

Traditional Observance

This commandment is traditionally observed by not bearing a grudge against others. Asking for forgiveness when we wrong others and seeking to be at peace with others by forgiving them is a major theme within traditional Judaism.

Other Notes

The gospel of Mark records that Herodias had a grudge against John the Baptist. (Mark 6:19) That grudge led Herodias to want to kill John... which he eventually did (Mark 6:27-28). Although he was "very sorry" (Mark 6:26) when he ordered John's execution his grudge had led him to a point where he had given his word.

We are able to fulfill this commandment today and should not bear a grudge against others lest such behavior lead us into additional sin.
